On-Site Power Generation
Highly efficient local energy production.
Onsite power generation with Jenbacher gas engines can provide you with highly efficient local energy production. Using an onsite energy supply, you can decrease your company’s operating expenses (OPEX), improve the reliability of your power supply, reduce carbon footprint and gain fast access to power when you need it.
Jenbacher engines deliver a power output range from 250 kW up to 10.6 MW per unit using natural gas and other gaseous fuels. More than 25,000 Jenbacher engines have delivered efficient onsite power to our customers in 100-plus countries.
Why consider onsite power generation?
- You may be facing costly heat and electricity rates and need to cut expenses. The fee to connect to external energy sources can be significant.
- You need greater stability. Your energy supply is unstable and you run the risk of unplanned outages.
- You need to expand. Your company wants to grow, but support from your energy source is not dependable. You need faster, more flexible and reliable power.
Benefits of onsite power generation
-
Multiple ways to increase your OPEX
The cost of electricity and heat is an integral part of a company's product and service expenses but generating energy at the point of its use can be more cost-effective than buying energy from centralized sources. In fact, Jenbacher´s onsite energy solutions could decrease your energy-related expenses up to 40% or more.
If needed, you can also convert heat produced by our engines into hot water or steam for industrial needs. Or, that same heat can be converted to cold for air conditioning and refrigeration. You can even extract clean CO2 from exhaust gases.
In addition, excess energy can potentially be sold back to the grid or to third-party companies, bringing additional OPEX savings to your business.
The cost of energy produced using Jenbacher’s onsite power generation solutions depends on several variables, particularly the cost of gaseous fuel. Our experts are ready to calculate the possible cost of energy for your company, as well as develop economic models of your potential project. Reach out to our experts to learn more.
-
Improve power supply reliability
Growing energy demand coupled with natural disasters and intermittent renewables continues to challenge grid operations across the globe and decrease utility reliability.
Onsite power generation solutions based on Jenbacher gas engines have high reliability and availability levels. Such power plants can efficiently work in “island mode” providing power to the facility when the grid is down. When the grid is available, our engines can operate in parallel with it, reducing the amount of power that needs to be purchased, lowering costs.
-
Reduce emissions
Modern gas engine power plants have a smaller carbon footprint than coal or oil-fired power plants (diesel, HFO, etc.). Jenbacher gas engines can be equipped with efficient catalysts for significant emissions reduction of NОx and СО2, for instance.
Our power plants can also run on waste gases (including biogas and sewage, landfill and furnace gas). Jenbacher´s technology converts waste gases into energy, and greenhouse gas emissions can be significantly reduced.
And then there’s hydrogen. Our company is ready to supply engines that run on a gas-H2 mix or even on 100% hydrogen. Power plants working on pure H2 can tremendously decrease their carbon footprint. Consult with our experts to learn more.
-
Power solution flexibility
Onsite energy solutions allow your company to increase power output gradually by supplying additional power units (containerized or installed inside your building) in line with your operations’ expansion plans, splitting capital expenditures over time.
Also, Jenbacher’s containerized solutions allow you to simplify the installation, speeding up the start of operations.
-
Use your company's waste to supply its power
Your manufacturing process may result in waste gas production that can be converted into energy by Jenbacher engines. In addition to simply decreasing waste, you can lower your energy-related OPEX and meet emissions targets.

Fast access to power
Onsite power generation is especially important if your company needs quick access to energy.
Third-party energy suppliers, like Utility companies, may not be able to provide additional power capacity. If they do, obtaining access to energy can mean serious infrastructure investments, or may take a significant amount of time.
On the other hand, Jenbacher gas engine power plants can be commissioned in eight to 16 months (time to Commercial Operation Date). Time to COD may be even shorter if units are in stock.
The complex task of implementing onsite power generation usually is delegated to companies with solid technical expertise that can deliver a turnkey project. Our portion of your project’s scope can be as simple as supplying and commissioning your power generation equipment or as complex as a turnkey solution, including such steps as energy audits, engineering, construction, commissioning, and long-term service support. Jenbacher and our partners are ready to help you with all of the steps necessary to realize your project.
Several options are available to help you deliver your project, including purchasing, financing, and leasing options as well as engaging a service provider (ESCO, BOO etc.):
- Purchasing
- Credit, Leasing
- ESCO, BOO/BOOT
Onsite power generation projects can be delivered with your own funds or by using external financing:
- Using your own funds usually allows you to maximize the project’s economic effect. Clients often use credit or lease the equipment.
- Another option is to engage 3rd party partners, providing an energy service type of contract. This allows you to significantly decrease both capital expenses and technological risks. As a result, your behind-the-meter power plant may be constructed using the 3rd party partner´s funds and resources, and your company will benefit from lowered energy tariffs.
Jenbacher's partners are ready to offer financing and energy service options to our customers. Our experts can advise you on whether these options are applicable for your project.
Depending on your country, region, industry and other factors, various public and private programs such as subsidies or “green” tariffs may be available for your company. Want to know more? Get in touch today!
